This book is a very enjoyable read especially for anyone who has lived on a prairie farm or anyone who would like to learn more about farm life. The characters face adversity and good times and get through it all with hard work, humour and respect. Many important lessons are learned by all the characters in the book and the reader. Definitely a good read and a book that you will want to share and read again.

For anyone who grew up on the Prairies, there is plenty in this book that will resonate: one room school houses, Christmas concerts and spelling bees, winter blizzards, chores, trips in the cutter, Saskatchewan hospitality and neighbourliness, and resilience in the face of adversity.
Set in the fifties, this book is told from the perspective of a ten year old girl in a family with four brothers. She very suddenly loses her mother under mysterious circumstances. As she navigates the difficulties of dealing with loss, responsibilities too heavy for a child to shoulder, and complicated family relationships, her perspective deepens and she comes away with important lessons to sustain her.

I just finished Sure as the River – it’s a rainy day here and I’ve spent the last few chapters bawling. Your books are priceless! Thank you for
the sweet, pure simplicity thus far. I’m so touched by these first two. Shelley has given me the next two and the reason I’m enjoying them so much is
that my 93 year old Mom is reading along with me, too…..she’s reliving so much of what it referred to, and the humor in your stories has us laughing out loud.
Let me just express again, our gratitude for these stories, and the important Canadian facts you’ve included.

Charlotte gives her reader a vivid picture of each character inside and out, their likes and dislikes, and their hopes and struggles. She captures their moments of joy and adversity in a way that makes you feel like you’re experiencing them alongside each one.
We learn while reading of the life experiences of Maggie, Bobby, and the rest of the Fiske clan that there is definitely power in words and we all have something to say.

Well, I did it! Read all three of ‘em. How were they? My idea of a well written book is this; if once you start, and you can’t put it down. It’s a good book! “Foot Steps” I read as soon as I got home from the birthday party and of course, knew the names and places in it so it brought back a flood of memories. Then came _._on the Prairies! Being a child of the depression, it brought many childhood memories of living through tough days similar to what you portrayed in the Cleaver family, which upon reflection, enabled us to progress through life with more hurdles than the average individual.
Sure as the River, again was one I had to read non-stop even if it meant reading all night. It was touching the way in which you made the reader feel he/she had walked the halls of the hospital, which I figured was the one in Old Battleford. Keep it up! May there be many more, I’ll read them all.

My favourite character from the series is Stanley Fiske. Stan is a wonderful husband to Bessie and father to Bobby and Fred. Stan provides support for Maggie and her family even when they don’t seem to want or deserve any help.

Even through very tough times and near tragedies Stan is a great source of strength for others. Stan is a great example to everyone who knew him (and reads about him).

Our residents are almost through Dot On The Prairie and everyone relates to things like THE BLIZZARD OF ‘55 and even staff are interacting with residents about what they remember from that time. They are so happy to have your series. When Erica heard that you could be coming for a spring visit to Canwood, she immediately said, “Could she possibly come and meet our residents? That would be such a highlight for them to meet the actual author!"

Thank you! Our Books arrived. They are wonderful. Our ladies have a reading group on Monday evenings, and they will start with Dot on the Prairie!
I am thinking that my mom would love these books as well.

I finished reading the Adler chapters and final message tonight ... with a few tears in my eyes. Your subject matter is very touching, and your writing skills just keep getting better and better.
You truly have a gift when you can both educate and entertain simultaneously, and so beautifully!
Thanks for sharing.

What a wonderful quick read story, Charlotte. I love the way you use such descriptive words as you talk about surroundings, people, feelings, etc. I just had to read the last two chapters before I had breakfast.
Thanks so much for giving us a wonderful week of sharing your creative writing talent. It was a great TREAT this Halloween Day. I’m so thankful for being able to connect via the internet with each other and being able to enjoy your wonderful stories.
Many thanks, Charlotte.
